Myofascial release works primarily on two things: Fascia and muscle. Fascia is the sheath that surrounds all the structures of our body. It is the glue that surrounds all of our insides, keeping them together. Our muscles are made out of fibers. In a healthy muscle, these fibers are well-aligned one by the side of the other, similar to those of an elastic band, providing smooth glide when during muscular contraction (shortening) and stretching. Trigger points are basically knots in these fibers. These are congested points in muscle tissue, and they can even refer pain to other areas. For example, a tight upper trapezius muscle is often a cause of headaches.
The particular technique for trigger point therapy consists of the application of pressure on a “knotted” point in order to force the nervous system to release tension in that particular area. This pressure can be stationary, or can be done with gliding movement along the muscle fibers in order to help them realign.
Although while some like the feeling of the pressure on a trigger point and for some it is uncomfortable to receive at the moment, trigger point therapy is effective in releasing very tense musculature, leaving the person feeling much more released and mobile at the end of the treatment. Working on a trigger point can also treat pain located in an area other than where the felt muscle tension is, due to the referral pattern of muscles (Each muscle can actually refer pain elsewhere.)
How a Trigger Point Gets Released
The therapist will usually warm up the muscle to prepare it for this release and if possible stretch it after the release to enhance the effect. The pressure applied is usually energetic, but progressive; with an affective trigger point release the pain should diminish with time and the referral patterns disappear (if present). If the pain does not diminish, other factors should be considered such as a different muscle affecting the release of the one worked on. Therefore, communication between the receiver and the therapist is important. As the targeted area is generally problematic, it is common to observe the presence of muscle contractures directly on the trigger points involved, which explains the discomfort experienced by the receiver. Special attention will be paid to the client predisposed to muscle spasms.
